BOBGOBLIN (real talk)

Posted by chrisking on July 28, 2010 | Category: coming to rev room

SOMETIMES…I get asked questions about bands. Ok, pretty much all the time. But one of my favorite sub-topics of the band convo is “Bands that should’ve made it”. One at the top of my list would have to be Bobgoblin from Denton, TX (and Little Rock).
Chances are good that you may not have heard of these guys as the height of their popularity in the region was mid-late 90′s. They had a record deal. A REAL record deal. But like so many others…it just didn’t work out. And that’s a shame.
BOBGOBLIN was unique in look and backstory. Not many acts have an actual backstory, but Bobgoblin was a band featuring members of the Liberation Front Street Motor Forces – an army from the future. Or something like that. It didn’t necessarily play into the music, but it fit with their Devo-esque look and stage manner.
But the music – man, I LOVE the music. Pop/Punk/Rock/Electro all in one blast. Did it sound like the 80′s? Yeah (and there wasn’t much of that in the 90′s). If you can imagine the best parts of The Cars (pre-Heartbeat City), Cheap Trick, The Pixies, and “Dookie”-era Green Day – then that’s almost as awesome as Bobgoblin’s first CD “JET”.
Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to find the best of Bobgoblin streaming anywhere online – I suppose Universal Music Group still has them tied up in copyright issues. So, what you need to do is go to Lastfm or itunes and download the following now – “Nine”, “Climb”, “Pretty in My Uniform”, “Killer”, “Safe”, …hell, just get the whole “Jet” album, and then get “12 Point Master Plan”.
BOBGOBLIN will be appearing for a reunion performance at Rev Room this saturday night at 9pm (they will play prior to KINGSDOWN). If you have ever wanted to know what I listen to and what I love, then please be here for Bobgoblin. And don’t make fun when you see me singing along
