It’s with great sadness that we have been informed that GURU has passed away of cancer at age 43. Straightup, I never really listened to GANGSTARR, but that’s where he got his start. I know GURU because the Jazzmatazz Vol. 1 record was heavy in my rotation during the summer of 1993. Chances are if you were a regular at JR’s Lightbulb Club during that summer, you probably heard me bumping it throughout the club.
A couple of years ago, we had the honor of hosting Guru’s Jazzmatazz at Rev Room. It’s easily in my top 5 list of shows that you should’ve been here to see (attendance was light). Do yourself a favor, and get your hands on a copy of Jazzmatazz Vol. 1. GURU was a true originator of rap/jazz/soul fusion. He and his music will be missed.
