What Bingham’s Oscar Means to Me

Last night Ryan Bingham won the Academy Award for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture for his tune “The Weary Kind”. Many of you (but not everyone) are aware that Bingham has played twice at Sticky Fingerz during the past 24 months. In fact, when he was last here in May 2009 the show was almost a sellout. We knew that he was trending upward fast, but we could’ve never predicted that some 9 months later he would win what could be considered one of the top annual songwriting awards.
And that’s exactly what makes me so proud. As a talent buyer in Arkansas since 1991, there have been hundreds of nights that the staff and a handful of customers have watched excellent acts come and go on our stages. So many times we’ve had that feeling that we were seeing something special even if the cool kids or whoever weren’t there to see it for one reason or another. When a Ryan Bingham wins an Oscar, or when a Zac Brown Band is nominated for country music’s Entertainer of the Year award – it just makes us feel validated for taking risks and losing thousands and thousands of dollars in order to continue to provide Arkansans with the best live music experience possible. Thanks so much for your continued support, and Congrats Ryan Bingham.
