When Did Peace Get Square?

When Did Peace Get Square?

On one of many disappointing BestBuy trips this week, I took RKM’s advice and picked up the Chickenfoot disc (If you aren’t familiar, this is the new rock “supergroup” featuring Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony (Van Halen), Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith (Red hot Chili Peppers)).  The album/band is everything I wanted it to be. Call this one a case of hitting the bull’s eye on my expect-o-meter. Basically the audio equivalent of making your Delorean do 88mph.  Let’s go back in time, baby!

disclaimer – I’ve never claimed to be a Van Halen fan…until the late 90′s when I got nostalgic for the all of it (minus the “Dude-from-Extreme-years”.  I’ve seen the band 3 times, including the 5150 tour at Barton with special guests Bachman Turner Overdrive, but they totally lost me at “Poundcake” and that sucky song from the Pepsi commercials.  I’ll admit the Dave-reunion show at Alltel Arena was one of my favorite nights of 2008.

I’ve listened to this pretty much all week. It’s full of crazy lead guitar, old-school backing vocals (Michael Anthony’s back-ups make everything sound so classic), and Hagar’s somewhat scruffier screams.  The lyrics?  Absolutely could’ve been written by a 4th grader.  And not the “”excelled learning” 4th graders?  Just a regular ol’ 4th grader.  You see, popular music used to be a lot more fun and less self-aware (or hip).  There is still a place for this kind of rockn’nroll – or there should be anyway.  The best review I can think of came from Suzon upon hearing it in the car - ”This sounds just like “Best of Both World’s?”.  Yeah, it does.  I think Eddie Van Halen would agree.
